Washington cannabis employee training requirements

Washington law requires licensed cannabis retailers to train all employees on the state's cannabis rules, identifying people under 21 and keeping minors out of the store. Stores with a medical endorsement must also train staff on authorizations, recognition cards, the patient database and product THC and CBD levels. The state sets no hours and approves no course. Keep training records with other employee records on the premises for five years.

What the training has to cover

  • The rules adopted to carry out Washington's cannabis law
  • Identifying people under 21
  • The board's other requirements to keep people under 21 out of retail outlets
  • Medical endorsement stores: recognizing valid authorizations and recognition cards, entering patients in the medical cannabis database, product strains and THC and CBD levels, letting card-holding patients aged 18 to 20 enter and buy, and letting patients under 18 enter with their designated provider

Does the course need state approval?

The law makes the retailer responsible for training employees and names the topics. We found no LCB list of approved employee courses. Stores with a medical endorsement need a certified medical cannabis consultant, which is a separate Department of Health certificate.

Records to keep

Keep all employee records, including training, payroll and date of hire, on the licensed premises for five years and available to the LCB.
