Michigan cannabis employee training requirements

Michigan requires licensed marijuana businesses to train employees from a written employee training manual that covers safety, employee guidelines, security and product education, including dosage and purchasing limits. Adult-use businesses must add a responsible operations plan, and sales locations need written point of sale procedures. The rule sets no hours, no deadline after hire, no refresher schedule and no state course approval. Keep your manual on hand for inspectors and keep licensee records at least four years.

What the training has to cover

  • Employee safety procedures
  • Employee guidelines
  • Security protocol
  • Educational training: product information, dosage and purchasing limits, and educational materials
  • Adult-use sales: a responsible operations plan explaining how staff will prevent over-intoxication, underage access, illegal sales or distribution, and criminal activity on the premises
  • Sales locations: point of sale or transfer procedures covering dosage, product information, health or educational materials, purchasing limits, CBD and THC information, serving size, and consumption information and warnings

Does the course need state approval?

We found no CRA process for approving training courses. Each business must train employees from its own written employee training manual, keep copies and provide them to the agency on request. An outside course can support that training but does not replace the manual.

Records to keep

Keep copies of the training manual and point of sale procedures and provide them on request. Licensee records in general must be kept at least four years (R 420.203), and longer if the agency is investigating. The rule sets no separate retention period for training records.

How our courses fit

Michigan Cannabis Workforce Training (Learn Brands). Covers the shared educational topics in about four hours online: Michigan law under the MRTMA and MMFLA, purchase limits, ID and age checks, privacy, security and emergency response, and dosage, serving size and onset times. It supports the training your manual describes but does not replace your written manual, responsible operations plan, point of sale procedures or store-specific training. It is a Learn Brands course; we found no CRA course approval.

Michigan training questions

Does Michigan require cannabis employee training?

Yes. R 420.602 requires licensees to train employees according to a written employee training manual and to give the CRA copies on request.

Is there a deadline for training new hires?

The rule sets no deadline after hire. It does require entering new employees in the statewide monitoring system within seven business days.

How many hours of training are required?

None are set. The rule lists required manual topics but no minimum hours.

Does the CRA approve training courses?

We found no CRA approval process. Each business is responsible for its own training manual, and an outside course can be part of that training.

What must a dispensary's training cover?

Safety, employee guidelines, security and product education. Adult-use sellers also need a responsible operations plan, and sales locations need point of sale procedures covering dosage, purchasing limits, CBD and THC, serving size and warnings.

How long should we keep training records?

The rule sets no specific period for training records. Licensee records in general must be kept at least four years under R 420.203.
