Alabama cannabis employee training requirements

Alabama's medical cannabis program is now selling to patients, but only on a small scale. As of late summer 2026, dispensaries had opened in Montgomery, Talladega and Athens, and the AMCC said challenges to the fourth dispensary license and the integrated facility licenses were holding up 28 more locations. Every registered agent must finish the Commission's foundations training within 60 days of registration, then complete at least 6 hours of Commission-approved continuing education each calendar year (certified dispensers need 10 more). Keep signed certificates for at least 3 years.

What the training has to cover

  • The Commission's medical cannabis foundations training program
  • Any specific courses the Commission requires
  • For certified dispensers: proper dispensing procedures under the Act and rules
  • For certified dispensers: preventing abuse and diversion
  • For certified dispensers: other public health, safety and good business practices related to cannabis

Does the course need state approval?

Foundations training is provided by the Commission. Continuing education courses must be provided by or preapproved by the Commission, whether a licensee or a third party runs them. The Commission does not publish a list of approved providers, so ask it directly.

Records to keep

Each certificate of completion must be signed by the agent and by an HR director or the person overseeing continuing education compliance, kept on file for inspection, kept for at least 3 years, and sent electronically to the Commission on request. AMCC Form L-2 is the continuing education certificate.

Why it matters at inspection

The Commission can take graduated disciplinary action under Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-4-.22, from warnings and fines to probation, suspension (up to one year) and revocation. The rule sets no dollar cap.

Free and state-run options

The foundations training program is provided by the Commission. Ask the Commission about its cost and format.

How our courses fit

Alabama Sell-SMaRT Responsible Vendor Training. A partner Sell-SMaRT course (about 4 hours) covering Alabama law and daily limits, safety and security, verifying patient eligibility, difficult situations, and patient safety. The AMCC approves continuing education course by course (Form L-3) and publishes no provider list. Cannabis Trainers holds the course's approval with the Commission. It does not replace the Commission's own foundations training, and certified dispensers still need their 10 extra hours of approved dispensing education.

Alabama training questions

Are Alabama medical cannabis dispensaries open yet?

Yes, a few. As of late summer 2026, dispensaries had opened in Montgomery, Talladega and Athens. The AMCC said legal challenges were holding up 28 more locations.

When do new Alabama dispensary employees need training?

Each registered agent must complete the Commission's foundations training within 60 days after their agent registration is issued. Certified dispensers must pass it before they begin work.

How many continuing education hours does Alabama require?

At least 6 hours each full calendar year after foundations training, under the rule as amended effective June 14, 2026. Certified dispensers need at least 10 more hours of approved dispensing education each year.

Yes. Continuing education must be provided by or preapproved by the Commission, even when a licensee or third party teaches it.
